Joining a troop can be intimidating, especially when it comes to what you need to know and obtain to have a successful journey. These pages are designed as a quick reference to get you up and running quickly.
It can be overwhelming to see all the supplies and equipment needed to run a scout troop. Rest assured that you don't need it all at once.
Handbook
Each scout should have a Scouts BSA handbook (boys or girls version). The handbook has tons of useful information for the scout to progress through his or her scouting journey, and it is also where rank advancement and service, camping, and hiking logs are tracked on paper.
The handbook can be purchased from the Scout Shop. Be sure to purchase the boys or girls version as appropriate.
While not required, we recommend a zippered book cover be purchased to protect the book and hold items such as pens and other supplies the scout may need. These are available via the Scout Shop, however any book cover that fits the book is acceptable as long as it doesn't have non-scout related quotes or large logos.
Field Uniform Shirt
This is the tan button down shirt on which the scout's rank and other emblems are displayed. Scouts are strongly encouraged to wear this shirt to all meetings and council events unless otherwise noted. Field Uniforms are available at the Scout Shop.
The scout may have the standard green and khaki '339' numbers sewn under the council patch on the shoulder, or a custom '339/35 year' unit number can be purchased from the troop for a small fee.
Troop 339 Activity Shirt
This is a charcoal grey Troop 339 dri-fit shirt which is worn on campouts and at activities where a Field Uniform could be damaged or soiled. We recommend scouts wear this under his or her field uniform so they'll be ready should they need to remove the latter for an activity.
The Activity Shirt can be purchased from the Treasurer during troop meetings.
Neckerchief and slide
Troop 339 scouts wear a red Scouts BSA neckerchief with white trim and a traditional Scouts BSA slide. Being part of a scout's equipment, it should be worn with the Field Uniform shirt
Both the neckerchief and slide are provided to new scouts as part of your initial registration fee.
Troop 339 Hat
The Troop 339 hat is a red hat with white '339' which is worn during outdoor activities to protect scouts' faces from the sun.
This hat is provided to new scouts as part of your initial registration fee.
Scout shorts and scout belt
We encourage scouts to purchase scout-specific or olive green shorts and a Scouts BSA belt to be worn with both the field uniform and activity shirts. Typical scout shorts have many pockets which can prove very useful during projects and camping.
Merit Badge Sash
The merit badge sash is where the scout displays merit badges earned and, if desired, any activity patches and special awards. Sashes are worn when a scout attends Boards of Review (BOR), Courts of Honor (COH), and other activities where a full field uniform is required.
Scout socks
Scout socks are not required but complete a proper uniform.
Camping Gear
Tent & ground tarp
Sleeping bag
Flashlight/headlight with spare batteries
Water bottle
Mess kit
Personal first aid kit
Pocket knife (can only be used after Scout has earned the Totin' Chip)
Yes, this list may grow as your scout hones his or her interests, but it should provide a good foundation for a successful scouting experience.

We use the following online tools to communicate, register for events, and track the scout's advancement through the program.
ScoutBook is where the scout's advancement, training, leadership, membership, and service hours are tracked. You will receive an e-mailed invitation to join ScoutBook soon after filling out the application and submitting it to our New Member Coordinator. Be Sure to check your SPAM or Junk Email Folder.
Scouts use TroopTrack for event scheduling and registration. Within TroopTrack, each scout has a 'money' account where contributions and fundraising proceeds are stored as a payment source for activities scheduled within TroopTrack. Like ScoutBook, you will receive an invitation to join TroopTrack via e-mail, so check your SPAM and Junk folders if you don't see it within a few days.
