If your flowerbeds were square, this task would be easy. But in most cases homes have curved and elongated flower beds. In some cases, there are detached flowerbeds, trees, side flowerbeds, etc.
The measurement you are trying to calculate is the AREA. To get that measurement, you need to multiply the LENGTH and WIDTH of an area. In cases where the flowerbed is curved, just walk a straight line as closely as possible to the length and width of each area you are measuring.
Once you have the length and the width (in feet), click the button below to pull up a mulch calculator which will tell you how many bags you need and a cost estimate. Remember to specify 2 cu ft for shredded mulch and 3 cu ft for pine bark.
You'll want to round up the number of bags to the next full bag, so the cost may be slightly higher than estimated in the calculator.
Do I need to be home?
No. When you place your order, please provide as much detail as possible on where you want the mulch installed. For example: “I need more mulch on the front bed.” , “I need all mulch installed in my flower bed in the back yard”, "Please save me # bags and set them next to e.g. my garage door".
How big are the Pine Bark Nuggets?
The nuggets vary in size. On average they run about 2-3 inches.
What types of mulch are available?
We always carry shredded hardwood mulch and Pine Bark Nuggets.
The shredded mulch comes in 4 colors: Red, Brown, Black and Cypress (Natural)
The Pine Bark Nuggets are all brown.
If you are looking for something different, please ask and we will contact our supplier and see if it is available.
How much mulch should I use?
You want at least a 2- or 3-inch layer for a decent coverage, about half of that will work into the underlying soil before you go to replenish in fall or the next spring.
Will the mulch prevent weeds?
To prevent weeds, you should apply about a 4-inch layer. That will keep the weed seed from germinating.
How long will mulch retain its color?
The color of most mulches made from natural material (shredded hardwood, pine bark, straw etc. etc.), will fade in about a year, depending on the amount of sunlight that hits them.
What type of mulch lasts longer?
Bark mulches consisting of large pieces will decomposed slower hence lasting longer than smaller bark and shredded-wood mulches. All type of mulch will wash away if homes do not have gutters.
